14-17 May 2012. *Spatially Enabling Government, Industry and Citizens*
.The joint GSDI World Conference (GSDI 13), the 14th GEOIDE Annual
Scientific Conference, the 7th 3DGeoInfo Conference , and the Canadian
Geomatics Conference 2012 will take place in historic Québec City,
Canada at the Québec City Conference Center in the heart of the city.
Primary partners in organizing this conference include the GSDI
Association and GEOIDE. Geographic information technologies and spatial
data infrastructure play critical roles in allowing governments, local
communities, non-government organizations, the commercial sector, the
academic community and common people to make progress in addressing many
of the world's most pressing problems. Further, use of spatial data in
conjunction with mobile technologies is becoming pervasive within many
nations. While mapping and spatial data infrastructure development was
previously accomplished only by governments, this is no longer the case.
All sectors of society are becoming spatially enabled and contributing
to the development of the global spatial data infrastructure. Whether
using hand-held devices incorporating phones, cameras, GPS, maps and
location services or using sensors and wireless communications embedded
within our homes, offices, stores, vehicles and along our travel paths,
citizens are helping to build the next generations of spatial data
infrastructure through their contributions of location and descriptive
data. This conference will explore the complementary roles of
government, private industry and the academic community in realizing
better means for sharing geographic data and technologies and developing
improved location-based services for meeting real world needs. Details
at http://www.gsdi.org/gsdiconf/gsdi13/.

24-26 October 2012. *Introduction to Wetland Remote Sensing and
Mapping*. Lafayette, Louisiana, USA.**This workshop is a special
designed introductory 3 day session of lectures, discussions, and
hands-on exercises that emphasize the use of manual and cognitive
interpretation skills of aerial photography/imagery in assessing and
mapping wetland vegetation from species level to broad vegetative level
classifications. This workshop provides necessary imagery analytical
skills for assessing classification performance of computer automated
classification routines and products. A special final computer
digitizing and delineation exercise, to display final
interpretation/analysis results, will be provided. Included is a full
day field trip to forest and coastal wetland areas to develop imagery
recognition signatures and verify wetland interpretations made in the
classroom. Course content has been designed for natural resource mapping
specialist, field biologists, researchers, and others who deal with
wetland wildlife habitat, environmental quality and impact assessments.
Since interest in this workshop is likely to be high, an early
application is suggested. *Cost: *$385. For more information, contact:
Ashley Hartley-- USGS/RAC, workshop coordinator, Phone: (337) 482-0670.
Email: ahartley at usgs.gov <mailto:ahartley at usgs.gov>

30 October -- 1 November 2012. *Advanced Wetland Photo-Interpretation.
*Lafayette , Louisiana, USA. This three day workshop will cover: The
development of a methodology for mapping wetlands projects; application
of the Federal Geographic Data Committee adopted Classification of
Wetlands & Deepwater Habitats of the US system; photo interpretation of
seasonal color infrared aerial photographs/imagery; use of topographic
maps and soil surveys, historical wetland aerial imagery & maps, other
ancillary information as aids in the photo interpretation/analytical
process; ground-truth techniques and utilization of other field data.
This course will include classroom lectures, classroom exercises in
photo interpretation of wetland habitats with access to stereoscopic
options and fieldwork. A special final computer digitizing and
delineation exercise, to display final interpretation/analysis results,
will be provided. Several field (2) trips will be experienced to provide
wetland classification signature development and classification mapping
confidence. An understanding of the identification of wetland habitats
from aerial photography/imagery (*as presented in the Introduction to
Remote Sensing and Photo interpretation of Wetlands) is essential for
this workshop. *Work related experiences can be substituted for the
introductory workshop. Cost $385. . For more information, contact:
Ashley Hartley-- USGS/RAC, workshop coordinator, Phone: (337) 482-0670.
