RAMSAR COP 11 STRESSES ROLE OF WETLANDS IN ADDRESSING CLIMATE CHANGE – The
role of wetlands in addressing climate change is to get a boost following
the 11th Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties (COP 11) to
the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as
Waterfowl Habitat (Ramsar Convention). Ramsar COP 11 took place from 6-13
July 2012, in Bucharest, Romania, under the theme “Wetlands: Home and
Destination” and concluded with the adoption of 22 resolutions, including
one on climate change and wetlands.

HANCOCK TIMBER BUYS TIMBER PORTFOLIO OFF FORESTCAPITALPARTNERS - The Hancock
Timber Resource Group has acquired 1.35 million acres of timberland from
Portland, Oregon-based Forest Capital Partners, Hancock Timber President Dan
Christensen said in a statement. Terms of the transaction, which closed
today, were not disclosed. Hancock Timber is acquiring 376,000 acres in
Louisiana, 573,000 acres in Oregon, 138,000 acres in Idaho and 264,000 acres
in Washington.

FIRST IUFRO-FORNESSA REGIONAL CONGRESS HELD IN NAIROBI - The First
IUFRO-FORNESSA Regional Congress opened on 26 June 2012 at the World
Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. Organized by the
International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) and the
Forestry Research Network of Sub-Saharan Africa (FORNESSA), with support

VIET NAM RECLAIMS FOREST LAND WITH HELP FROM FAO - The UN’s Food and
Agricultural Organization (FAO) says more nations around the world are
realizing the positive contribution that the forestry industry can make to
the development of a green economy. In Viet Nam, the loss of forested areas
has been reversed and the country is now increasing forest area by about one
percent every year. Julie Walker reports.

EARTHOBSERVER APP ON IPHONE - The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of
Columbia University has released an App called EarthObserver specifically
for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. EarthObserver is available from the
Education Category of the iTunes App Store. The app is free for a limited
time.
