FOREST INFORMATION UPDATE VOL. 13 NO. 8
August 2012
Welcome to this edition of FIU –
Our relationships with forests are highlighted in this edition. The discussion around the merits of impacts of fire on natural resources is loaded with views from managers, policy-makers, lobbyists and just plain citizens. Articles on the topic are included below. In the Miscellaneous section below find out how forests are increasingly seen as one way as reducing the large burden on national public health budgets through prevention. Biodiversity includes a FAO Progress report of 2011 on the data availability of the two Nutrition Indicators for Biodiversity.
Please find below our latest batch of articles, listing, meetings and web sites for the natural resource sector. Please feel free to contact me for more information.
Kind regards
Mike Smith, Editor and Director info at southem.com

IN PICTURES: NIGER'S HUNGER-FIGHTING TREES - Something new is taking root in a small and dusty corner of western Niger, reports the BBC. The unremarkable looking moringa tree has become a frontline weapon to fight the recurring droughts that have hit the West African nation. See the story in pictures at:

CAMOUFLAGE OF MOTHS: MOTHS ACTIVELY SEEK OUT BEST HIDING PLACES - Moths are iconic examples of camouflage. Their wing coloration and patterns are shaped by natural selection to match the patterns of natural substrates, such as a tree bark or leaves, on which the moths rest. But, according to recent findings, the match in the appearance was not all in their invisibility. ScienceDaily report:

PICS FIRE UP DEBATE ON FOREST MANAGEMENT
Not quite a video but…what is described as “Our Changing Forests: An 88-Year Time Lapse : The Picture Show : NPR” shows 83-year-old pics of forest management techniques compared to today’s methods. Commentators the older methods are better for fire prevention compared to modern methods, which they say have led to widespread wildfires in the USA.
