sawmilling investment and extend its Southern Africa business. Shareholding
Minister for Public Enterprises Malusi Gigaba has ruled out privatisation,
Engineering News reports. The move is part of a review by Stellenbosch
University looking at the economic impact of allowing Safcol to pursue a
strategy of vertical integration, and the environmental and economic impacts
from such a move.

GUNNS STRUGGLES AS INVESTORS THINNING OUT
Singapore-based Richard Chardler Corporation has no interest in picking up
struggling Australian timber giant Gunns Ltd, a spokesman told Southem
Online. Gunns has hit rock bottom with a 2012 preliminary final result at a
net loss after tax for the year ended 30 June 2012 of A$903.9 million. The
forestry assets were reduced in value by A$749.2 million. New Zealand
billionaire Richard Chandler’s investment company earlier this year walked

LATAM LOSING FOREST THE SIZE OF A SMALL COUNTRY
Latin America lost forest the size of a small country in the period from
2001 to 2010. A new study finds 260,000 square kilometres of forest was lost
during the period. The new study is the first to assess both net forest
loss and regrowth across the Caribbean, Central and South America,
Mongamay.com reported. Rhett A. Butler wrote that the study, published in
the journal Biotropica by researchers from the University of Puerto Rico and
other institutions, analyzes change in vegetation cover across several
biomes, and finds largest gains in woody vegetation area occurred in desert
vegetation and shrublands. NOTE: The land area of Uruguay is 173,620 square
kilometres

ABORIGINES SUPPORT INDUSTRY OF FORESTRY TALKS WALKOUT
Tasmanian Aborigines have thrown their support behind industry groups who
have pulled out of the forestry peace talks, The Australian newspaper has
reported. The Forest Industry Association of Tasmania and Australian Forest
Products Association said at the weekend they would boycott the talks unless
the State Government guaranteed state forests would still be managed by
Forestry Tasmania. The Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre said yesterday it would
follow the associations' lead and abandon the peace talks.

SOCIAL MEDIA, ECONOMY FORCE NORSKE’S NZ NEWSPRINT MILL CUTS
The impact of economic conditions and the rise of digital media are behind
Norway’s Norske Skog plan to halve newsprint production at its Kawerau mill
in New Zealand. Dwindling domestic and offshore sales have prompted Norske
Skog Tasman to plan for a cut in annual production from 300,000 tonnes to
150,000 tonnes. The NZ company’s general manager, Peter McCarty, is quoted
as saying the newsprint industry faced challenges due to general economic
conditions and increasing competition the print media is facing from
electronic media.

EUCALYPT REPLACEMENT FOR ASBESTOS VIABLE - RESEARCHER
Research in Brazil shows that eucalypt fibres can replace the asbestos, the
non-renewable product blamed for causing health problems. The thesis of the
Eng. Gustavo Henrique Denzin Tonoli, currently Professor at Universidade
Federal de Lavras, Minas Gerais. demonstrates eucalypts can replace asbestos
in the manufacture of cement, with minor costs and using a renewable

NZ WOOD PROCESSORS CONCERN OVER AUST ILLEGAL LOG LAW
Jon Tanner, of the New Zealand Wood Processors Association, says even though
his members support a proposed Australian law to stop illegally-logged
timber, ABC has reported. Timber exporting countries, including Indonesia
and Papua New Guinea, say a proposed law to stop illegally-logged timber
from being imported into Australia will have a devastating impact on trade.
But Jon Tanner says: "At the moment, we have no idea to what extent we have
to prove legality, and proving legality is a difficult thing."

PARAGUAY PLANS 450,000 HA REFORESTATION
Paraguay’s National Forest Institute (Infona) highlighted plans to reforest
some 450,000 hectares within a period of 15 years for supply the internal
market for wood energy and commercial processing. Ruben Segovia, President
of the Infona, said that the implementation of the project is important
because currently only 60,000 hectares of reforestation are recorded and
"wood is a material that is needed a lot", Lignum reported.

GOAL POSTS SHIFT ON COUNTRIES ACCOUNTING FOR EMISSION LEVELS
Countries themselves will decide how to set the reference emission levels
(RELs) to be used as benchmarks to assess how they perform, says a report
“Forests and Climate Changer After Durban” produced by the FAO Regional
Office for Asia and the Pacific and RECOFTC and CoDe REDD Philippines. The
report says there was some agreement in Durban on how carbon account systems
should be set up for REDD+, however the move for countries to assess their
own performance differs from the way similar land use and forestry
accounting rules were set up in 1997.

FORMALDEHYDE EMISSIONS FOCUS OF ARGENTINE SUBMISSIONS
In Argentina, research agency INTI, through its wood furniture centre, has
launched a laboratory to develop greater control of formaldehyde emission,
the volatile chemical compound used in the manufacture of boards and wood
products. In addition, INTI signed an agreement with Spain’s Technological
Institute of furniture, wood, packaging (AIDIMA in Spanish), which will
provide technological support for carrying out such checks. One aspect of
the study is to provide better protection for workers.

NZ WASP FIND BOOST FOR RESEARCH ON EUCALYPT ATTACK BEETLE
Researchers in New Zealand are going a step further towards using a
biological control agent to combat a beetle effectively preventing the
expansion of eucalypt plantations in the country. Scientists at Scion in
Rotorua have made a breakthrough in identifying a wasp able to attack the
larvae of Paropsine beetles, originally from Australia. Funding has now
come from companies, industry groups and public sources for further tests,
including one to find another, even more robust, predator. (Source: Forest
Health News 227, Scion)

SOUTH AFRICA’S WATER BILL DEEPENING BY THE YEAR
South Africa’s capital requirement for the water sector has increased to
R670-billion over the next ten years, up from an initial estimate of
R573-billion earlier this year, Engineering News reported. Water and
Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa published the second National
Water Resources Strategy (NWRS2) for comment. It’s reported that the funding
gap stood at R338-billion over this period, but the Minister indicated that
the bill could be lowered significantly by improving water management and
governance as laid out in the new water resource plan.

BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION ON FOREST FARMS
Fundación Hábitat y Desarrollo Habitat Foundation and Development, Concordia
Agricultural Experimental Station of INTA, and the company Forestal
Argentina are holding the second seminar on biodiversity conservation in
forest farms. During the same outstanding professionals associated with
this subject will present the conclusions of experiences that seek to
contribute to the conservation of the flora and fauna in productive forest
landscapes. This initiative will be an excellent opportunity to share
concerns, clarify doubts, positions and meet different actors linked with
sustainable forest management, in an atmosphere of cordial exchange of ideas
