LASER TECHNOLOGY, INC. DARES ALL ARCPAD USERS – TAKE THE LaserGIS CHALLENGE
Laser Technology, Inc. (LTI), the designer and manufacturer of the most
popular line of mapping lasers and rangefinders, is daring all ArcPad® users
to take a GIS mobile mapping challenge. This new campaign was officially
announced at the opening day of Esri’s User Conference, July 25th 2012. The
challenge is to test out an LTI TruPulse® 360 mapping laser and the
LaserGIS® ArcPad® extension completely risk free without any upfront costs

IS WOOD PULP THE NEW WONDER MATERIAL? NANOCRYSTALLINE CELLULOSE GETS HOT
The New Scientist reports nanocrystalline cellulose produced by processing
wood pulp is being hailed as the latest wonder material. Japan-based Pioneer
Electronics is applying it to the next generation of flexible electronic
displays. IBM is using it to create components for computers. Even the US
army is getting in on the act, using it to make lightweight body armour and

US LAND MANAGERS WARNED TERRORISTS TARGETING DYING FORESTS - The Salt Lake
Tribune reported that the FBI has warned land managers in the USA that
terrorist groups might seize on dry conditions and stands of beetle-killed
trees to ignite forest fires that would cost millions to fight and create
widespread chaos, Utah’s forester said. We took it quite seriously," said
Dick Buehler, director of the Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands.
"It was distributed to all land-management agencies in the United States."

UPGRADED FOREST INVENTORY SOLUTION RELEASED - F4 Tech has announced the
release of SilvAssist version 3.0. SilvAssist reduces the steps required to
setup, manage, report, and analyze forest inventory. SilvAssist is an
extension to ArcGIS by Esri, the industry-leading provider of GIS software.
It complements F4 Tech’s Real-Time Inventory (RTI) by providing faster, more
thorough GIS tools for managing forest inventory cruises. This software
helps foresters minimize steps between cruise setup and provides reports and
analysis while combining inventory and geospatial data together into one
database and application.

HEAVY RAIN STALLS TIGER-TRACKING OPERATION - Incessant rain has stalled the
tiger-tracking operation, the Times of India has reported. The forest
department has stopped combing in the area due to flooding. At least two
man-eating tigers are on the prowl in Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh state, North
India. The forest officers are yet to localise the big cats.

MAJOR PUBLISHERS JOIN SUSTAINABLE FORESTRY INITIATIVE - Four major North
American publishers – Time Inc., the National Geographic Society, Macmillan,
and Pearson – have joined the Sustainable Forestry Initiative’s (SFI) Forest
Partners Program as founding members. The program creates a way for the
publishing industry to support SFI’s certification program for forest and
forest products. SFI said the new partners will work collectively with the
SFI community to make certification more efficient and accessible by
providing resources for activities such as shared consulting expertise,
group certification or audit coordination.

HELP!

FEEDBACK

TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE – “Pay it forward!” If you can help with any of the
requests below, please take the time to do so. Your kind assistance will be
appreciated and rewarded.

EXPANDING OPERATIONS - David Van Hendry writes: “I have a logging Operation,
Wood Receiving Yard, and 30 years experience in the Timber Industry in Gulf
Coast Region of the US. I am a Registered Forester and Professional Logger.
I am looking to expand my operation into other areas.” Email to
timberplus at bayspringstel.net

COBARFLORIS QUERY - Michael Corcoran writes: “Recently, I was reading a
Christmas fairy tale called "The Rose and the Ring", by William Makepeace
Thackery, in which the principal characters are the nobility of two
neighbouring kingdoms, Krim Tartary and Paphlagonia. The princes and
princesses are given nicknames in mock Latin and mock Italian such as
Cavolfiore( Cauliflower), Rosealba( White Rose), and Bulbo( Tulip) as well
as Giglio( Lily); however, one of the main characters was called
"Cobarfloris", which does not have any immediate translation in any
language, ancient, medieval, or modern. I was wondering whether anyone might
know something about the existence of a species of wild flower, vegetable,
herb, plant, or weed conceivably corresponding to the pseudo-Latin
nomenclature of "cobarfloris" ?” Email:
omarthrawnthree at ymail.com

OPPORTUNITIES - Several readers of FIU are seeking employment in the
forestry field. If you have jobs available and are in need of good people,
please consider posting your vacancies in FIU (there is no charge for this
