ago, the USDA Forest Service had a newsletter called ‘Timber
Tips’. This
was a very informal publication that carried short tips on how
to improve field
and office work. Such a tip was how to determine where north is

field without a compass. If you have a watch, point the hour
hand towards the
sun. The north-south line will generally lie halfway between the
hour hand and
