Forestry Study Tours 2012 -</b> Dr. Robert Donnelly is again
offering his very
successful forestry tours to Brazil. The tours comprise two
separate,
consecutive, one-week segments: First Week: This 7-day tour
takes place in
southern Brazil. We visit eucalyptus and pine plantations,
manufacturing
facilities, logging operations, nurseries. Second Week: Further
to the North,
and over the next 7-days, we visit the major eucalyptus growers
of Brazil.
These are the most efficient pulp producers in the world. The
experience is
learning about their eucalyptus pulp manufacturing prowess,
eucalyptus
sawmilling, the latest genetics, silviculture, wood quality
developments and
harvest operations, plus a modern plantation-based charcoal
facility in the
north. If you have an interest or would like more information,

October 2012
will mark the 20th anniversary of the Report of the Blue Ribbon
Panel on Forest
Inventory and Analysis. This report expanded the focus of the
national forest
inventory in the United States to include monitoring of the
forest resource
trends on a more frequent time interval. In recognition of this
milestone, the
theme of the 2012 FIA Science Symposium is “Moving from Status
to Trends.” The
Symposium will bring together international forest scientists,
managers, and
stakeholders to share insights on contemporary issues, science
policy,
mensuration, geospatial products, inventory and monitoring
methods, and other
topics .A call for papers is now open. For details see

burrs sticking
to the lower part of their pants when walking thru the country
side. By the end
of the day, our pants looked like they were covered with wool.
Not only were
the burrs irritating, they were a devil to pick off consuming a
considerable
amount of time to do so. The next day a thinking young forester
wrapped plastic
bags around his legs as a test. The result - no burrs.
Thereafter, the whole
crew had the leg wrappings improving field efficiency and
recycling plastic at
