The site, approximately 1000 sq km of lowland dryland forest, is held under an Ecosystem Restoration licence for 100 years. The objective of the project, which is a collaboration between the RSPB, Burung Indonesia and BirdLife International, is to restore the site to ensure effective conservation of the range of threatened species that the site is important for. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Palatino Linotype","serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoBodyText style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt'><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Palatino Linotype","serif"'>We are looking for a Senior Scientist to lead the work of the Research and Conservation Department at Harapan Rainforest (HRF). You will develop the science required to support the effective restoration of the site so you will need particular skills and experience in tropical forest restoration. The HRF research team includes expertise in biodiversity surveys and monitoring as well as forest conservation. You will work closely with the HRF Forest Operations Department to deliver restoration activities according to best practise. You will undertake research to contribute to the successful restoration of the site in particular and advance our understanding of tropical forest restoration in general. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Palatino Linotype","serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Palatino Linotype","serif"'>You will work in partnership with the Head of the Research and Conservation Department of HRF so that they are able to effectively fulfil their role in leading the Department and that a range of work areas are delivered by the Department. These include developing and implementing a research and monitoring strategy for HRF, training project staff, overseeing field data collection, analysis of a range of ecological datasets using up-to-date and relevant statistical techniques, reporting of research findings to project partners and in peer-reviewed publications, and developing and supporting external scientific collaborations.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Palatino Linotype","serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoBodyText style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt'><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Palatino Linotype","serif"'>You will need to hold a PhD or equivalent experience with several years post-doctoral experience with special skills in areas of tropical forest botany, tropical forest restoration ecology, sampling design, field survey and monitoring programmes, statistical analysis, computing, technical writing and fieldwork and have the flexibility to acquire skills in new areas. Experience of carbon stock assessment and monitoring and GIS skills would be advantageous. You will need a proven ability to carry through research programmes from conception to completion. Experience and knowledge of southeast Asian forest trees is desirable as is knowledge of other taxa such as birds and mammals. This post requires a high degree of diplomacy and cultural awareness. Ability to speak Bahasa Indonesian is desirable and, if not, a willingness to learn. Experience of working overseas with other cultures, especially in developing countries, is important. You will need the ability to lead and manage a team including mentoring, supervising and training staff.
