Two PhD Opportunities in UCD Forestry: i) forest management & ii) social forestry
About UCD Forestry
The UCD Forestry research group focuses on developing solutions to problems associated with changes in the economic, environmental and social context in which forestry operates. UCD Forestry comprises five core and one affiliated academic staff, one research manager, two postdoctoral researchers, two research assistants, 21 PhDs and one MSc student.
Summary of the positions
UCD Forestry would like to recruit two PhD candidates to conduct research in the area of optimized (forest) land-use in Ireland. The research focus will be on addressing the challenges resulting from the competition of different demands for multiple (forest) ecosystem goods and services under changing environmental, economic and social
conditions. This research is part of the EU-funded FP7 collaborative project "Future-oriented integrated management of European forest landscapes" (the INTEGRAL project).
The two PhD students will work (together) on two landscape-level case studies in Ireland. One student (job ref INTEGRAL PhD.01) will focus on forest management decision support systems for multi-criteria decision making and the other (job ref INTEGRAL PhD.02) on social forestry, especially participatory decision making and planning methods and processes. Both students will be expected to attend INTEGRAL project meetings in Europe and present their work to European audiences.
Preferred Selection Criteria
INTEGRAL PhD.01: BSc and MSc which together cover the following disciplines: forest science or a related field, computer programming and the development of GIS-based decision support tools.
INTEGRAL PhD.02: BSc and MSc which together cover the following disciplines: forestry or related field, social forestry, environmental governance, land-use policy and planning, and social or political sciences.
Both positions: capable of independent research and team work. Be prepared to work together during parts of the research. Very good oral and written communication skills in English are mandatory. A clean driving licence is desirable.
We offer
Both PhD positions are available for 3.5 years. Start of the work contract is as soon as possible but no later than 16 January 2012. The (tax-free) scholarship will be €16,000 per year and EU-level tuition fees (€5,800 in 2011/12) are paid by the project. Each student will be registered for the PhD degree with University College Dublin. The
research should result in the successful defence of a PhD thesis in 3.5 years.
Application process
Indicate in your application the position for which you are applying (INTEGRAL PhD.01 or INTEGRAL PhD.02). The application deadline is 9 December 2011. Applications from non-EU citizens should include evidence of access to funding to pay the higher tuition fees (€11,600 in 2011/12). We will acknowledge all applications, but we will contact only short-listed candidates. Please send your CV and a cover letter (in which you explain why you are interested in the position and why you should be selected for the position) to: Prof. Maarten Nieuwenhuis, E-Mail: maarten.nieuwenhuis at ucd.ie for INTEGRAL PhD.01 and to Dr Aine Ni Dhubhain INTEGRAL PhD.02.
