*Authors Sought*-Be part of a new edited volume addressing global
climate change, tentatively titled World Turning: Race, Class, Gender,
and Global Climate Change! For this unique volume, (publisher to be
confirmed once submissions are), we are seeking contributions from
academics and activists with experience and expertise in addressing the
social dimensions of global climate change in their work, with a
particular focus on intersections of race, class, gender, and other
social markers. World Turning is intended to be a multidisciplinary
reader that will introduce undergraduate and graduate students to the
major issues and debates surrounding the study of intersectionality and
global climate change. The volume will be broadly organized into
sections on the social and natural sciences, as well as public health,
art and literature. Specifically, we are seeking essays or articles
between 15-25 pages (including notes) that address any aspect of climate
change: legal, political, social, educational, agricultural, economic,
religious, sexual, ideological, international, local, etc. and that
incorporate an intersectional analysis. In addition, we are seeking
original essays, poetry, investigative reporting or other creative works
(including art) that also address climate change in relation to any form
of activism. Contributions may be visual, empirical, theoretical or any
other creative form, and may be between 1-20 pages (including notes).
Preference will be given to original pieces but we may also consider
previously published pieces. If you are interested in contributing,
please submit a 500 word abstract of your piece (or details / examples
of your art / activism) with the title, author, and institutional or
organizational affiliation (if any) to Dr. Phoebe Godfrey at
phoebe.godfrey at uconn.edu <mailto:phoebe.godfrey at uconn.edu>, Dr. Rachel
Hallum-Montes at rhallum at ufl.edu <mailto:rhallum at ufl.edu> or Medani
Prasad Bhandari mbhandar at maxwell.syr.edu
<mailto:mbhandar at maxwell.syr.edu> or Dr. Shangrila Joshi
joshis at denison.edu <mailto:joshis at denison.edu> by March 1st, 2012. From
Medini Bhandar, GAOF list.
*PhD in Forest Modeling Complexity*- We are looking for a motivated PhD
student to work on a modeling project that investigates the potential
tradeoffs between managing forests for efficient provision of goods and
services and adaptability in relation to global change factors and in
the context of complex adaptive system theory. The project will be
coordinated between the University of Quebec a Montreal (UQAM), Oregon
State University, and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences,
Umeå, Sweden; with the student being based at the UQAM, but travelling
among the three universities. Required qualifications include a basic
training in forestry, forest ecology, and forest economic and a strong
background in quantitative sciences and modeling. To apply or for
further information, send a letter of interest outlining your
suitability and motivation, a CV, and a list of references to Klaus
Puettmann (Klaus.Puettmann at oregonstate.edu
<mailto:Klaus.Puettmann at oregonstate.edu>), Christian Messier
(messier.christian at uqam.ca <mailto:messier.christian at uqam.ca>) or Jon
Moen (Jon.Moen at emg.umu.se <mailto:Jon.Moen at emg.umu.se>). The candidate's
acceptance will depend upon successfully obtaining a scholarship from
the Forest Modeling Complexity program
(http://www.fcm.uqam.ca/index.asp?lang=en). From Sebastiao Kengen
*FOREST FRAGMENTS -- *Last week, I mentioned 'Timber Tips' an old USFS
publication that provided helpful hints to those that work in the field.
I have since scanned the document and put it up on the web as follows:
USFS. 1986. *Timber Tips*.2400-Timber 8624 2813. USDA Forest Service
Equipment Development Center, Missoula Montana. 48 p. Part 1 -- pages
1-20: http://home.comcast.net/~gyde/1986tips1-20.pdf; Part 2 -- pages
21-28: http://home.comcast.net/~gyde/1986tips21-48.pdf
<http://home.comcast.net/%7Egyde/1986tips21-48.pdf>.
Using that as a guide, I am seeking any techniques you may have on
improving field, office or even daily routines that I can share with
fellow list members in this secton. Any suggestions you submit should be
short (preferably around a paragraph, but no longer than one page).
Please include a short title of your suggestion, your name and email
address with your submission and send to gyde at comcast.net
<mailto:gyde at comcast.net>.
*Pay It Forward/-- Cheers, Gyde/*
