What did the Chief Executive Officer of Harvard Management Company really

HOPES RAISED, AGAIN, FOR TASMANIA’S FORESTRY PEACE DEAL
Hopes are being raised that the protracted negotiations around a forest
peace deal in the Australian island-state of Tasmania may be coming to a
conclusion. Hopes have been raised before, only to be dashed. However, the
ABC reports the arrival of the Federal Environment Minister, Tony Burke, in
Tasmania is seen as possibly foreshadowing an outcome to a process started
in 2010.

ARGENTINE CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY SLOWS
Argentine construction activity in Argentina during June dropped for the
third consecutive month compared to a year ago. The drop was 1.5% according
to official figures reported by MercoPress. The main construction companies
involved in public works and in the private sector said that in the third
quarter the decrease tendency in activity will persist.

ANNUAL LATAM FOOD INFLATION RATE TO YEAR’S HIGHEST LEVEL
The annual inflation rate in Latin America and the Caribbean food was 8.9%
in June, its highest level so far this year, the said regional office of the
UN Food and Agriculture Organisation. La Nacion reported the indicator was
0.8 percentage points higher than reported in May, due to an increase in the
value of the chicken, tomatoes, and onions mainly, said a statement from
the FAO, which has its regional office in Santiago, Chile.

ELDORADO BRASIL ADOPTS HIGH PRECISION SYSTEM FOR MEASURING WOOD LOADS
The Brazilian company Eldorado Brasil is installing a system to handle as
much as 6 million cubic metres of timber a year to supply resources to the
largest single pulp mill in the world, at Três Lagoas (MS). Painel Florestal
reports the company sought the most modern equipment in the world and
acquired, in November last year, Logmeter 4000 solution, which will load
measurement on the trucks stacked. Developed by Woodtech Measurement
Solutions, the solution has already been adopted by other companies in
Brazil as Berneck, Suzano, Fibria, Cenibra and Arauco and consists of a
high-precision laser system for measuring loads of wood.

SOUTH AFRICAN LAND RESTITUTION PAID OFF, MOSTLY
Financial compensation for post-apartheid land restitution in South Africa
was mostly well spent, despite misgivings by the Commission on the
Restitution of Land Rights, a report has found. Engineering News reported
Princeton Professor Bernadette Atuahene compiled the report, "Paying for the
Past: Addressing Past Property". She found that in about 30 per cent of the
cases, the restitution award did produce "a substantial economic benefit".

WEYERHAEUSER URUGUAY BOOSTS SAFETY IN FORESTRY SECTOR
Weyerhaeuser Productos S.A., the Uruguay offshoot of the US group, is
endeavouring to raise awareness and continue the training of professional
drivers at service of the company. The theme focused on aspects related to
road safety in the country, the conditions of the company fleet, the risk
factors in the operation and the prospects for the future. Technical and
conductive analysed causes, consequences, and preventive mechanisms,
identifying conditions and risk behaviors, both own such as those arising

ARAUCO HERALDS ERA OF NEW LABOUR RELATIONS
The Chilean forestry company Arauco is aiming to institute a new era of
labour relations. Recently, the company included in 58 hours of study 25
trade union leaders of 11 companies that provide services to Bosques Arauco
S.A. It’s reported those involved soaked new techniques for effective
negotiation, communication aimed at coordination in the enterprise, labour
law and social security, as well as relevant materials on risk prevention.
Arauco said in a statement that for its forestry and forest affiliates this
initiative was part of its new way of doing things, seeking to promote a
more harmonious relationship and dialogue between companies and their
workers through a new model of labour relations.

ARAUCO’S ANGÉLICA PRATS GUEST SPEAKER ON SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT
Meanwhile, Arauco Educational Foundation manager Angélica Prats was a guest
speaker at the seminar “How to improve our schools?” organized by the Center
for Comparative Policies in Education (CPCE) of the Diego Portales
University in Santiago, Chile. The seminar’s objective was to present and
learn from successful school interventions conducted in Chile and New
Zealand.

GREEN STAR FOR AUS BUILDING PRODUCTS ENCOURAGED
The Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) has released a Discussion
Paper ‘Life Cycle Assessment in Green Star’ for stakeholder feedback by 15
August 2012. The GBCA is a national, not-for-profit organisation launched in
2002 committed to developing a sustainable property industry for Australia
by encouraging the adoption of green building practices. The Australian
Forest Products Association reported that it considered that integrating LCA
principles into Green Star would offer many benefits to GBCA current
approach. AFPA welcomes the investigation into a LCA approach and plans to
supply feedback on the discussion paper along with other interested industry
stakeholders.
